So we got up this morning to a grey warm wet day, it was tipping it down and we were going to go up the chair lift to the air walk 700 metress above sea level. The parents arrived at about 9AM and we sat around in the lobby trying to work out what to do as the cloud was about 200 metres. We were just about to get into the cars when Jen shouts out 'I've had a txt from David Holman, we might be going team racing'. - what. Ann drove me down to the club and they were having to resail 3 races from our pool from the day before.
Noone could tell us what was happening. Then a Greek IODA official called Marina shouted at me that they had been calling for us on the loud speaker- I must be going deaf! we had qualified in 16th place and get out right now as your race was going to start- hmmmmmm.
I rang the hotel, and the boys got changed and driven down. David Holman rigged the boats and we were transfiormed from day off to team racing.
I was given a RIB and we went out. We passed the NZL's who thought that they were team racing from the day before, and when they were on the water, found that they weren't- how odd is that and Wilzy the NZL coach was confused too.
It was still raining and I didn't have a radio or a race shedule and the committee boat was pointing the wrong way round so we couldn't see the race numbers- fun.
The Greek IODA lady had a go at me again and told me I should have known we might have been team racing- 'really' - I thought, anyway she said we had missed our race and it would be resailed soon against Singpore. The team thought that was really funny.
Except that it wasn't Singapore at all it was Thailand, and Poonpat's team. You can easily guess the next bit maybe.
The race went into sequence, and at 1 minute the wind went unstable and the tide was going upwind and swirling around- yes really, and it took a long time to reset the course. Josh was doing a great video analysis and then eventually it happened but it wasn't a fairly tale story, they were faster than us in the 2 knot breeze and had a superior [illegal] tack.
Matt and Scott volunteered to sit out of the next race, Scott sat out and was the video man.
We were up against Croatia and things were going well with Matt leading, Josh holding and Arran having a pin to get Ollie back into it. It was very close at the finish, but we lost by one point.
Considering we:- had no idea that we were going team racing the guys did a good job and learnt a lot from it.
Everyone thanked David for his help and then he went to watch the cricket on TV.
Its a few years since we were in the final stages. Overall results, Thailand, Singapore,Peru,Spain.
We then took the boys up a 700 metre cable car to a jungle mountain top and amazing sky walk across a bridge and finished off the at the Vollers beach hotel on the west of the island.
More stuff soon.
