Just got back from the grand opening ceremony which took place beneath the huge statue of an eagle that graces the seafront at Kuah.
The ceremony was very lavish with food for everyone followed by Malaysian dancing, parade of the teams and presentation of medals to all competitors and coaches, then more food, speeches, food, official flag raising by the Malaysian Navy and er... did I mention the food?
There seem to be more teams that I recall from previous Worlds and the atmosphere is great. Here's the GBR Team receiving their medals.
All were out training today and seemed happy to have been able to use their real sails today, but are grateful to the Malaysians who loaned them the training sails until theirs arrived. The offshore wind was rather too light - better near the shore but petering out not far off the beach. Let's hope for more during the actual racing which gets underway tomorrow. Speaking of racing, the team decided that it was time to get some shut-eye so returned to their hotel with Alan and Jen.
I'm camped out in the lobby at the Bayview Hotel where I can pick up wifi, the disadvantage being that I also have to sample the local night-life which seems to consist of very loud karaoke, some of which is done well and some of which ermmm... isn't.
Not sure what happened to the blog - some of the posts seemed to get archived unexpectedly - so if you haven't visited recently check out the link to "older posts" at the bottom of the blog.
Good luck to the team tomorrow - they'll be going afloat at about 09:30 so by the time morning comes in the UK there may be some news and results on the official IODA site - so please keep an eye on that.
